A pocket-sized pocket shark that is 5.5-inch long found in the Gulf of Mexico has turned out to be a new species. A scientist with The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Marine Fisheries Service Southeast Fisheries Science Center founds the specimen while collecting sealife during a 2010 survey to find out what Gulf of Mexico sperm whales eat by trawling in an area and at a depth where tagged whales had been feeding. The specimen is now part of Tunlane Univeristy's Natural History collection.
