Aerial view of Morganza spillway where water is being diverted from the Mississippi River. The Morganza spillway was opened on May 14th for the first time since 1973 in order to protect Louisiana's Capitol, Baton Rouge and New Orleans from flooding. The opening of the spillway will cause property damage to those living in the Atchafalaya Basin by diverting water from the Mississippi River allowing it to flow through the Morganza floodway to the Gulf of Mexico.
