Water from the Mississippi River flows through the Bonnet Carre Spillway now almost wide open after a gradual removal of bays that started on May 9th, 2011 to prevent the dangerously high Mississippi River from Flooding New Orleans by redirecting the water from the river to Lake Ponchartrain. The Bonnet Carre Spillway in Norco, Louisiana protects New Orleans from flood waters of the Mississippi River by controlling the rivers flow is controlled by The Army Corps of Engineers . The Spillway was built after the 1927 flood and is only opened when the river gets dangerously high.
