Pointe Au Chien in Southern LA is threatened by coastal erosion. Here are some reports/photo essays on the area.

  • Horse in front of an oil pumping station amongst dead live oak trees, an indicator of the saltwater intrusion caused by the levee system along the banks of the Bayou St. Jean Charles and channels cut by oil companies done off the Isle de Jean Charles and Pointe-aux-Chene.

  • Grace Welch and Josh Bergeron, both part of the Pointe-au Chien Indian tribe in front of her home in Pointe aux Chene LA. Welch inherited the home from her brother who died of a heart attack. <br />
She and Josh work on renovating the home since it was badly damaged by Hurricane Gustav. Both of them have taken jobs with BP to assist in the clean up since they have been closed down from shrimping and crabbing as of May 29th, 2010.

  • Mandy Verdin, part of the Pointe-au-Chien Indian tribe is out of work since they closed shrimp and crab season on May 29th. She was working with her daughter Grace Welch fishing but now is staying at home. Mandy has emphysema that was limiting her work hours before the season was cancelled and now worries about how her family will support themselves.  Shrimp season was canceled on May 29th when oil and dispersant made it into the nearby waters.

Tracie has been shrimping since she was two and doesn't not desire doing any other kind of work. Crab and shrimp season were officially closed on May 29th, 2010, due  to the BP oil spill that is making its' way into the lakes and bayous close to Pointe-au-Chien.

  • Faith Verdin in her grandparents home in Point aux Chene LA.   Her family are all part of the  Pointe-au-Chien Indian tribe. Shrimping and crabbing is how all the embers of her family made a living. Faith has been working for her cousin Grace Welch, but is no longer able since shrimp and crab season were closed on May 29th ,2010. SHe is worried about not being able to eat seafood ever again.

Southeastern Louisiana's wetlands were threatened by the BP oil spill but containment of the Macondo well saved most of the bayous lakes and waterways that make their way to the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana's wetlands are threaten by coastal erosion, climate change and the oil and gas industry.

They signed on to work for BP  putting out boom out  since no other work is available . The first day on the job, all the boats were called back due to inclement weather. All the workers who singed on to work for BP gather under a raised building at  Point-aux-Chene's boat launch waiting for the rain to let up.

Sydney is trying to get BP to pay for workers to boom of the area around the marsh where his ancestral graveyard is located on Bayou Pointe-au-Chien. Sydney's daughter Grace Welch lives next door and helps care for the families many grand children.  They live in a raised house that sustained damage in Katrina and Gustav and are no strangers to tragedy.

  • Russel DarDar, a Pointe- au-Chien Indian, Tribe monitors  the oil that remains on the shore of the marsh in Lake Raccourci washed up after the BP oil spill began when the Mandaceno well exploded.  BP decided not to clean the oil from the marshes near Pointe-au-Chien after concluding it would do more damage to the marsh then good.<br />
The Indians in Pointe-au-Chein tribe has been  have been impacted by the oil disaster since many are fishermen and it remains unclear what the long-term effects of the oil and the dispersant will have on the ecological system.
